Rita Doves poem Daystar talks about a woman who is both a wife and a mother and who is exhausted by her daily tasks. This poem takes place at a time of rest for the mother while the children take a nap. Doves use of meter and tone concentrates on illuminating the beauty and the importance of everyday events in normal lives. Rita Doves use of tone in this poem as well as the diction of words creates a unique feeling of sympathy for her poems character. When you think of the title `Daystar you consider a performer, such as an actress. This definition of star would surely bind in well with the idea of her double roles in which she must perform daily roles, as a mother and a wife. This makes up the diction which in its own way helps the author plan on how to make the readers empathize with the mother in the poem. The diction of the poem is the way the author puts the words together to forma phrase. This provides more of an understanding to the mothers emotions, as well as the audience reading the poem. Rita Doves diction of the poem helps maintain the idea of the theme. The title of the poem really ties in with the poem itself. A good example of this is in the poem is when the mother decides to set up her `palace of relaxation. `She lugged a chair behind the garage (line 4). Here the audience senses the amount of exhaustion and strain on the mothers body. After the mother decides `to have a little room for thinking (line 1). She contemplates a way to find a calm place to relax while she stops her daily chores. Another example use of words would be ideas she used to escape from the over bearing world she was in to a calm and peaceful world she needed. `Sometimes there were things to watch - the pinched armor of a vanished cricket, a floating maple leaf. Other days she stared until she was as sured when she closed her eyes shed see her own vivid blood (lines 6-11).
