Faith Amour Burton LSP 2200 25 November 2008 When the River People Had No River The Gila River, which at at a time traveled though central Arizona, was a lush harbor in the desert that supported livelihood at its wedges that was fruitless to survive in the surrounding harsh desert. From this life self-aggrandizing river, ecological and cultural systems developed. The Akimel OOdham, which translates to River People lived on the camber of this river, farming with an advanced irrigation system which had parts that were thousands of days old. The Akimel OOdham were a peaceful muckle best known for their financial aid to other tribes in peril. They had many related tribes, and communicate a language that was used across the southwest. By the 1920s, however, this once vibrant tribe was plunged into the depths of starvation and helplessness, as foreign hands came to their lands. Europeans had been toast in the Sonoran desert since 1539, but their involve ment with the River people was minimal. As the United States began to grow, and the feats possible by engineering grew, the Aikmel OOdhams livelihood was approaching its end. In the early years of training in Arizona, damns were created to the eastbound, to diverge wet to Anglo farmers, ranchers, and miners. The propriety of these developments in the east a long with the new availability to water to genus Phoenix allowed the city to grow and prosper in ways previously not allowed by nature. This redirecting of natural re lineages was a close to Anglo settlers in Arizona, but it doomed the Aikmel Oodham. The upstream damming and diversions of the river tout ensemble halt the delivery of water to the ancient native peoples of Arizona. Their witnesser of life gone, the River People had lost their livelihood. They were given a clear by settlers that seemed more appropriate for their plight: the Pima.
